54 imagesDuring a seven month field work trip on the Fiji-Islands I came back to Germany filled with inspiration and a memory box of beautiful moments, daring situations, exciting nights and unforgettable days. Over a five month period I conducted a shark research project, investigating a potntial nursery area for several shark species. UNtil then no research had been conducted in the north-western area of Fiji's main island Viti-Levu and we were keen on the results our fishery-independant survey would yield. For large parts of the time I lived in a fishing village right at the Ba river fully intergrated ito the village community. I had wonderful times with the people and will always chersih their incredible hospitabilty. Not only was I welcomed with open arms and never asked anything in return, but also was there a big interest into my work and I had many great talks on sharks, our project and the importance of these often hated animals. Fieldwork was demanding but wherever I could I had my camera with me and documentad my work. The result is this photo reportage - parts of which have won the 2016 Prize for German Science Photography.
